HOW TO CREATE YOUR OWN NATURAL PERFUME
What comes to your mind upon hearing the word perfume? Of course, to me it’s a sweet scented smell/aroma of something. Our well trained nose often think of aromatic and therapeutic fragrance. It seems to be quite easy for many today to produce a perfume. Fragrances that once held therapeutic values in the past no longer serve such a healthy purpose, but are now too synthetic and intoxicating to the extent of causing allergic reactions to many. In this post, I’m going to discuss how you can create your own natural perfume. Just keep reading to find out how.

For those of us who love to wear perfumes and colognes, some incite feeling of joy, confidence, a sense of well-being and moreover, lift spirit up and improve one’s mood. You can also create for yourself an unforgettable personal trademark by wearing certain type of perfume.
Can a cologne remind you of someone? It’s just amazing how the power of smell mixes up with a splash of fragrance and create the ability of an unforgettable memory that can lift up your spirits, enrich romance, and improves one’s mood. However, knowing the exact ingredient used to make your own natural perfume can be of much advantage.
In addition, perfume held a strong place in the society centuries ago, both in spiritual lives and physical lives. Again, many ancient civilization used fragrances to communicate with each other by expressing their emotions and thoughts through smoke, a silent scented connection.
The word “perfume” originates from the Latin for ” through smoke”. Cinnamon, Benzoin, etc were burnt as a way of cleansing and scenting the air.
Do This:
Most importantly, before creating your own natural perfume, how do you want it to smell? Woody, herby, green, earthy, floral, warm, heavy, cold, or light? What about the color? Red, pink, yellow, green, grey, black or white?
Put few drops of essential oils in a boiling water. Stand few meters away and inhale the fragrance for a few moment. Take a sheet of paper and write down the smell of each and every essential oil you inhale. So, make a note of how it smells. Again, decide choose whether you’ll prefer a strong scent or a more subtle scent (an example is eau de toilette that you can spray few times during the day.

Choose between:
- Eau de toilette— About 6-10% organic essential oils to 70-75% alcohol
- Eau de parfum— About 10-19% organic essential oils to 75-90% alcohol
- Perfume— Very strong. About 17-32% of pure fragrance to 90-95% alcohol

Without wasting much time, let’s start with just two (2) samples. An alcohol-based & an oil based perfume.
Alright, so we want to make some citrus scented eau de parfum in alcohol:
- 20 drops of lemon essential oil
- 10 drops of bois de rose essential oil
- 20 drops Petit grain essential oil
- 5 drops Lavender essential oil
- 15 drops Geranium essential oil
- 25 drops jasmine essential oil
- 70ml vodka
- 5 ml (1tsp) distilled water
- 100 ml bottle
Process:
- Add the 5 ml water and the 70 ml vodka together into a dark clean glass bottle.
- Add the 8 drops of sandalwood essential oil and (vetiver essential oils optional).
- Work upwards by adding the lemon, bois de rose, petit grain and keep mixing. Shake once and leave to cure. Transfer to a bottle.
- To cure mean, keeping them in a cool and dry place for at least 4 weeks for the ingredients to best blend together before use.
Alright, so let’s create a soft scented eau de parfum in oil:
- 20 drops orange essential oil
- 15 drops petit grain essential oil
- 15 drops lavender essential oil
- 5 drops palmarosa essential oil
- 25 drops rose essential oil
- 20 drops bois de rose essential oil
- 15 drops of cedarwood essential oil
- 50 ml jojoba oil
- 2 tbsp grapeseed oil
- 4 capsules wheatgerm oil
- 100 ml bottle
Process:
- Combine jojoba oil, grapeseed oil, and wheatgerm oil together and shake well for few minutes.
- Add all the essential oils together and shake once more.
- Allow it to cure for 4 weeks before use.
- Strain with a filter because of the wheatgerm capsules before transferring to your nice package bottle.
Finally, Keep it fun by playing around with your essential oils and your carrier oils to create your own natural perfume. It’s best use for 6 months to one year by keeping it in a cool and dry place.
